"It wasn't too long ago that I realized I was seeing many of the same volunteers at these events.These people - some runners, some not - were giving up their time so I could stay motivated and enjoy a rich social life. Look around at the next three races you run, My guess is that you'll also be seeing the same people at registration or the finish line. It's impossible to overstate the importance of volunteers to racing, yet they rarely get the thanks they deserve. I've always heard the unwritten runners' rule that for every three races you run, you should volunteer for one. My numbers are way off; I'm definitely running at a volunteer deficit. I have a karmic racing debt I need to work off. Do you?"
